About NWA

Michigan's First Chartered Public School
It is with great enthusiasm that we inform you of Michigan's first "chartered" public school academy. The Noah Webster Academy opened its doors September 3, 1994 to students across the state who were looking for a first class educational experience.

Four months after Governor Engler challenged the Michigan legislature to free our children and allow families to establish charter schools, he signed P.A. 362 of 1993 into law. This new law authorized the formation of public school academies. Academies are alternative public schools that give Michigan parents a variety of exceptional choices for their children.

Noah Webster Academy was authorized on April 13, 1994, to offer families individualized, self-paced learning for their children in the home. The children and parents work with the Academy's certified teachers in implementing the curriculum and other school programs.

Noah Webster Academy is designed much like Alyeska Central School. Alyeska has over 50 years of experience in providing distance learning services to Alaskan public school children. California has also implemented a charter public school to aid home-schooled children.

Families who enroll their children this school year will be helping to develop the most exciting public school in Michigan - the "school without walls." The home will again be the primary center for instilling knowledge, values, and ideals.

Noah Webster
Sixty years before this, in 1783, Webster had published his first speller, and in 1843, and for that matter in 1883, it was still going strong. No textbook has ever been so widely used in this country; no book ever influenced American spelling and pronunciation so profoundly and widely. It went through hundreds of printings; in 1829 it was revised, given a new name, The Elementary Spelling Book, and issued in the blue paper-covered boards which gave it its familiar name, the "blue back speller." In this form, too, it received a new frontispiece, an engraving by the earliest American engraver on wood, Alexander Anderson, of New York, and the design of his frontispiece in all its essential features is identical with that of the University of Michigan's old "Minerva seal."

Noah Webster, fought in French Indian War, America's First Schoolmaster, Christian, translated Bible into American language for the American people, Blue Back Speller full of Bible verses.
